The MU Music Business (Or Lack Thereof)

The University of Missouri is the center for many great programs, from its top-ranking J-School to the prestigious nursing program. But one career choice that is often overlooked here at Mizzou is the music business. While there are many clubs and organizations for those with an interest in the music business, there is no distinct curriculum.

Professor Jonathan Kuuskoski is an assistant professor at the school of music and he is well aware of the situation. Music is his life; he’s a professional pianist and entrepreneur for the arts. Because of his passion in both music and business, Kuuskoski has become an advocate to those seeking a career in the music business by serving as the faculty advisor to Mizzou Music Management (MMM), the main organization for students from all majors who wish to pursue a career in the music business industry.

“MMM provides a really important outlet for students to really create opportunities for professional experience,” Kuuskoski stated. “There’s the practical, hands-on experience when you work at True/False or Roots’N’Blues, you learn so much about what an event like that entails. You’ll learn a lot more from that than taking a course.”

True/False and Roots’N’Blues are annual festivals in Columbia where members of MMM are able to work, meet, and connect with filmmakers, musicians, and artists in the industry.

“Those networking connections … that’s the most important element.” Kuuskoski declared. Kuuskoski is a firm believer in learning through experience and collaboration, and that is what MMM, and the music business, is all about.
